Action Stations! Have your say on investment in stations.

Southwark Rail Users Group have let me know that Network Rail is currently carrying out a survey about local stations. The survey results could help bring extra investment and improvements into stations like Nunhead, Queens Rd and Peckham Rye. So please, please take a few minutes and fill it in. The deadline is the end of November.

More details on the Network Rail site or go straight to the survey here.

It would be really great if you could particularly focus on the comments bit, for instance it would be really good if a number of people asked for Nunhead station to be given (say) a lick of paint, the adjacent wasteland cleared and a live departure board outside the entrance. I'd also like to see it made fully accessible. For Queens Rd I'd like much the same plus a cafe/kiosk, more sheltered waiting areas and all the graffiti removed!

The worst station in Southwark has to be South Bermondsey, not really a station and more a platform on top of an embankment. It doesn't even have a ticket machine, after the last was stolen many years ago(this actually got me arrested at Bromley South because an overzealous Southeastern guard refused to allow me to buy a ticket their(which I had done many times before) and instead tried to fine me for travelling without a ticket, I refused to give my details and was arrested under section 28, although I was released 2 hours later, it wasn't a nice thing to experience. Especially because the reason for my journey to Bromley was to buy a small Christmas Tree.)

In regards to Nunhead Station, they are always redecorating it. Why don't they just open up the staircase to the elements and straighten it?
It doesn't appear to be load bearing(?). And there are two blind corners and it is a bit dark and "subway-ey".

Open it up, through the grass beds and get some sunlight in there, make it straight and save yourself a few bob on the whole having to redecorate it every 2 years thing that's going on now.

How awful!

Great points. Have you sent them in via the survey?

Dear Fiona,

I have just completed the survey and I agree with you that the adjacent wasteland should be cleared at Nunhead's station. Also the shabby business right opposite the station should be forced to replace their derelict gate which is faling apart and as been for years. Unfortunately, it is the first thing one sees coming out of the station, giving a very bad first impression to people who come to nunhead for the 1st time and an eyesore to those who have to see it on a daily basis.

I understand this matter is not in the hands of the rail company, but should Southwark council not be able to enforce some regulation regarding businesses "kerk appeal"?

Thank you for your always interesting Blog. Kind regards , Virginia
