Nunhead Community Centre - Progress at Last

Sorry for the lack of postings. I understand this is a common side effect of bloggers taking to Twitter.

So some positive news at last about the Community Centre. Following the high profile coverage of the campaign and occupation (thanks Southwark News!) the Council has now come up with a new suggestion that might just work.

They are still opposed to bringing the current centre back into use (they say it is badly constructed, too big and a maintenance nightmare). However, they are now willing to talk about building us a brand new Community Centre!!

Of course, it's not all good news. They'd like to build a much smaller centre than we'd like, it wouldn't be ready till spring 2011 and it's all still subject to the LibDem-Tory Executive agreeing the funding.

That said there seems to be room for some negotiation and considering where we were a month ago - being offered some tiny shop fronts in a block of flats or nothing - I think it's a big step in the right direction.
