Southwark Council's dirty habits
I went down to the Brimmington Estate this week to investigate complaints about Southwark Council leaving piles of rubbish all around the estate for hours and hours twice a week. It is a real disgrace. The video explains more.
I think this is horrible. It wouldn't be tolerated on a middle class street, yet the Council thinks it just "not ideal" on a council housing estate in Peckham. I'm writing to the Leader of Southwark Council to ask him to ensure immediate action is taken.

I live in Kings Grove, which is about as middle class as East Peckham gets. Veolia often forget to collect our rubbish and recycling as well, though it's not half as bad as the Brimmington Estate.
Thanks for letting me know. I'm generally keen to monitor how things are going since the collection was "outsourced". Do you think it's got worse? Do you report it when it's missed? It'll only show up in the performance stats and incentive scheme if you do.
Any missed collection is bad, especially if happens regularly, but I guess that at least on Kings Grove it's left in the wheelie bins so less likely to attract foxes and rats. These big heaps of black bags all over the pavement and roads are just foul.
What is all this spill about middle class?
I have 3 sons, one is a Consultant Cardiologist, one has a degree in law and one is a year 10 pupil at probably the best Public School in England.
Council services are either good poor or simply crap, let us leave the issue of class to the side.
I was a former union(engineers) Branch secretary and was labelled working class I prefer to be me, a class of my own
Thank you
It was a lot better under SITA.
The new guys aren't completely useless, some of the street sweepers are very good, but overall they are not as good as the previous contractor.
Lets hope that this new thing on OKR is worth it.
Hi Rob
Sorry, I guess I didn't phrase that well. What I mean is that I think the Council is treating Brimmington Estate residents like second class citizens.
You've been complaining for months and they've done nothing. Now you've got the police and me involved they say it's "not ideal" and they'll "explore ways of improving this in the comming weeks".
I don't think they are taking this seriously or giving it the urgency it deserves.
I want them to do something immediately.
Fiona
Better under Sita! Now that's saying something.
Sita ran the service till about 2003, then it was brought back in-house (as it was so bad) and the council ran the service themselves till last year when refuse collection was contracted out again to Veolia.
I believe the street sweepers are council employees still.
I can only speak about the street sweeper we have here, the guy is absolutely excellent but why he bothers when VEOLIA throw the rubbish all over the estate both before and AFTER the guy has swept.
I am not sure who employs the sweeper but he wears a VEOLIA badged jacket.
Ahhh - I did not know that. Some of the trucks and uniforms still had SITA on them.
It appears the service I was praising was run by the Council itself then.
