Renewal Area Update Sept '07
Mixed news on the renewal area.
I'm told that the Council has finally managed to recruit two "Renewal Managers", one to cover the Queens Road area and the other for the Evelina Road area. I'm not sure if they've started yet, but since this lack of staff has been the reason given for the lack of progress I hope that we will start to see some action.
The other good news is that a contract has been let for new lighting for a swathe of Nunhead. The focus is on the estates on the southside of Evelina Road, eg the Tappesfield, Barset and Buchan estates, where the lighting is extremely old and dim (it's still the old orange kind). Neighbouring streets such as Nunhead Grove and Gibbon Road will also be included. That work should start soon (but that's council soon, so could be a while yet).
Slightly worrying news is that a restructuring of the council's Regeneration Department means that the Renewal Team is being split in two, with officers dealing with housing renewal grants continuing to report to Housing Regeneration, but those working on regeneration of shopping area moving to the Peckham Program regeneration team. I can see the sense of this in theory, but I'm concerned it could result in more delays as new managers review plans. I spoke to the Head of the Peckham Program last night and he's agreed to arrange a presentation for the next community council meeting and a longer briefing session for councillors. I'll post again when I have more news.

Good to see you back blogging again. Rather a specific question, but I was wondering what plans have been made for the Queens Road area. I noticed that Anstall (sp?) Rd is in line to receive new garden walls and gates. I live on Caulfield Road - do you know if anything similar will be happening here? Let me know if there is someone else who I should contact.
Si
It's Astbury Road that is in line to receive new garden walls and gates (and I think a brick work clean up).
Astbury Road is the pilot scheme in the project and more roads are to follow. There was a map produced a few years back showing the streets that were planned to be done (which did include Caulfield), but the way things are dragging on I wouldn't want to swear that they'll get as many done within the current budget as they originally thought.
I'll see if I can glean more information next time I see them.
Please can you tell me where Sturdy Road falls in any regeneration plans?
Sturdy Road wasn't one of the street proposed for whole street works. It is within the area where home owners on low incomes (ie on income support) can apply for grants to bring there homes up to the Decent Homes Standard (ie insulation, safe wiring).
However, even if you don't qualify for this, you should benefit indirectly from any regeneration and promotion of the Nunhead area generally.
Hi Fiona
Friends are looking to buy a house in Astbury Road. I keep reading that this is going to be one of the first streets in the Peckham regeneration programme, but then we have been hearing that for ages. What is the latest on the programme? We up near Evelina Road is there any word on how things are going on the Nunhead programme too?
Thanks for your hard work in the area.
When it comes to new street lighting, I understand that it has to be bright enough to protect people walking at night but has any thought been given to how high the lights really need to be? I live in Gibbon Road and in my bedrooms at night I can easily read a book without ant room lights on due to light spillage from the street lamps. Light poluution has been a major problem in many cities and I would have thought that Southwark would have been proactive in trying to reduce overall excessive light. Lower the height of the lights and you reduce the spillage.
