Renewal Area to be confirmed?

Fingers crossed, but the proposals for a Renewal Area in Nunhead and East Peckham look set to become a reality. After a couple of years of lobbying the Executive decide on Monday whether or not the scheme will go ahead.

The officers are recommending that the Council goes ahead and is suggesting £14.5m of investment over 5 years, starting with £900,000 for lighting upgrades this year. The principle aim of the scheme is to improve the quality of the private sector housing in the area, but also to improve security (hence the lighting) and the shopping areas. It's a really exciting opportunity for Nunhead & East Peckham and I'm going to work closely with residents and officers to make sure we get the most out of it.

Will the lighting be inventive, like the lights in bellenden road. Or will they be over bright street lights that just light up the night, rather like a prison yard at night.
If the scheme get's the go ahead will it highlight the attractive potential of Nunhead lane/Green ? Will the residents of Nunhead be trusted will nice bus shelters like those along (Dulwich) village way. Or will the considerably elderly population of Nunhead be forced to huddle Under the newsagents awning for protection during Winter ? Will we ever have even a fleeting Beat patrol or will they all be patrolling Dulwich Village Park ? And let's not get on to Peckham Rye Park it sums up the councils treatment of the area no wonder the kids don't care when they are not even trusted with really good facilities.

I don't have the answers to any of these things as yet. The idea is that people who live in Nunhead should get involved and tell the council what they want. I certainly hope we're going to get something that reflects the character of Nunhead, I don't think people want a copy of Bellenden. Definitely not lights that shine up and obscure the night sky. When the officers arrange some public consultation I will post up the details so you can get involved in making sure we get the best for Nunhead.

Obviously not a copy of Bellenden Road. But something as tastefull would be nice. There seems to be a presumption on someone's part that the residents are happy with plastic flowers, 4 large Council waste bins to go with the 12 or so that line Rye park ( can you imagine the same bin's smack bang in the centre of Dulwich Village park ?). A green that comprises of 2 Forlorn looking plastic horses, 2 pub benches and a dog fouling area that smells great in the summer months. Although this is a vast improvement on it's previous incarnation.
Nunhead lane's strength could be it's small village feel, and it's history. 2 nice signs Proudly welcoming you to Nunhead would make a strong statement. It is a testament to Nunheads strength and resident support that our small parade of shops Comprises of 2 Butchers, and Bakery, A Fresh Fish shop, 2 Florists, It's own small Restaurant, a photographers a nice West indian Take away (Try the Rotis), a fantastic Fruit and Veg shop as well as numerous other businesses.
With regards to the Rye, I have read that as a park it is one of the oldest in the area dating back to Roman times. It's a shame it been so neglected over the years.

Do not spend the renewal money, on Road humps, signs, traffic calming measures, bus lanes. the companies who supply these things already make enough money. Support local craftsmen , be creative, Nunhead is unique and deserves a unique response from the renewal team. Not some Bog standard council blue print devoid of feeling. Someone's done a great Job with Bellenden Road so let them work there magic over this way.

And remember that the area just opposite Nunhead next to Queens Road station comprising the beautiful York Grove and the more grimy but fully intact Victorian terraces - Astbury Road, Colls Road and Dayton Grove deserves consideration too as we appear to be in the Nunhead ward too!

The Astbury Rd, Colls Rd and Dayton Road area should do pretty well out of this - it is one of the areas within Nunhead & East Peckham picked out for special attention to the housing.

Nunhead has a great history, could this not be reflected in the redevelopment. The high street is a traditional victorian one, could the shops not be returned to their original state instead of the metel maybe you could use nice wood finishesin keeping with the brick buildings. It would look lovely in the winter with the christmas lights and would bring people to the area. Maybe one of the empty shop fronts could be turned into a mini centre which charts the history of the area, cemetary, nuns head etc. It would be great. Maybe English Hertiage could be involved and we could embrass this opportunity to highlight the many plus of the area. I personally think if done right it could look better than Dulwich Village.

We are counting on you Fiona

Lightings great but until the theme is agree we should not go a head.

Being a local I am really pleased to hear residents wanting Nunhead Lane and it's surrounding area to be improved and allowed to make it mark. It's a great place with lots of potential.

I think helping to creatively develop and support the businesses and schools in the surrounding area is really positive. Especially making Nunhead Lane more of a village type place, with independant shops (a rare sight in London) that locals - within the ward and beyond - can walk to. Where else can you get fresh fish, flowers, bread, fruit& veg, meat and a cultural evening at a family run restaurant!
